"If it doesn't kill you, don't worry
about it." -Aunt Jean
The inspiration for
Relax and
De-Stress Your Life! is Mary Hunt's
The
Cheapskate Monthly, which is an excellent site to help you
get out of debt and live within your means. I knew with my
background, education, and talent that I could create such a
newsletter, but what would be my topic?
In December 1996 I was under a lot of stress: I just started a
new job in an academic department at a major research university, my
younger cat (at the
time) was having surgery, the holiday season was in
full swing, and we were traveling to visit my in-laws. It wasn't
visiting the in-laws that was giving me stress because I adore my
in-laws and get along with them quite well. It's just that
I hate flying,
and I think this is the trip that we were stuck in the airport for over
four hours waiting for our plane to arrive in inclement weather.
One night, lying in bed, I couldn't fall asleep because I was worrying
about everything. To help me relax and fall asleep, I packed a
mental suitcase. The technique is easy:
- Close your eyes
- Picture an open suitcase
- Pack everything that you're worried about into that suitcase.
- Close the suitcase and visualize putting it away, or even
throwing it away.
This technique helped me to roll over and fall asleep, but before I
did, I realized that I'm not the only one who has trouble with
stress. I thought of the idea and name of my newsletter that
night:
Relax and De-Stress Your Life!
I use the above quote from my Aunt Jean because I feel that it's
appropriate for this publication.
